Change in Population of Men’s & Women’s NCAA Gymnastics Teams (1981-2016)

"In the end, our society will be defined not only what by what we create, but by what we refuse to destroy." John C Sawhill, president, The Nature Conservancy, 1990 - 2000. The graph shown below starts from 1981-82, as the data collected by the NCAA from 1956 until 1981 was not collected in the same manner as the post 1981 data and included recreational programs. The largest number of men’s gymnastics teams recorded by the NCAA between 1956 and 1981 was 124 in 1971-72. There is a discrepancy between this and the 200 plus teams that are said to [...more]

Oklahoma Makes it 3 Straight; Modi Wins 2nd All-Around Title

The 2017 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships could not have been scripted any better. As expected, Oklahoma (431.95) won their third straight Team title, and a three-team dogfight for 2nd place was decided in the final rotation. Ohio State (423.70) overcame the adversity of losing a teammate earlier in the week to surge past Illinois (422.10) and Stanford (421.50) with a season-high 71.95 on VT. The Illini and Cardinal finished valiantly on [...more]

NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Live Video/Live Scoring Requires Some Tweaking

NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Live Video/Live Scoring Requires Some Tweaking

NCAA Men's Gymnastics is a fantastic product, but it does have a few shortcomings. Over the years, viewing options have certainly improved and grown in number. Last season, the optimal team-streaming standard was via Ustream, and this year it's Facebook Live. The quality is great and it's user-friendly. The Facebook Live option is mostly good for dual meets, but with some imagination, it can work for a tri-meet or a quad-meet. Oklahoma has a very good traditional cable/satellite live broadcasting deal with Fox Sports, but the offering is [...more]

Ohio State, Oklahoma and William & Mary Win Conference Titles

Ohio State, Oklahoma and William & Mary Win Conference Titles

Senior National Team member Sean Melton and Jake Martin competed together in the AA for the first time this season, and the result was a bunch of much-need points on the board for Ohio State. Bouncing back from last season's injury plague, Martin has been the Buckeyes' work horse all season long, making him the 6th-ranked all-arounder in the country. He nearly hit for his average (83.30) and finished 2nd to his long-time teammate. Also brushing back nagging injuries, Melton competed in his first AA of the season (85.05), successfully defending [...more]

NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Six-Feet and Over Club

NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Six-Feet and Over Club

It has been a few years since we compiled a list of six-footers in NCAA Men's Gymnastics. In seasons past we have consistently seen over a dozen of these tall gymnasts on the rosters in any given year. The most well known have been such All-American stalwarts as Oklahoma's Russ Czeschin (6'3") and Jeremy Adams (6'2"), Illinois' Luke Stannard (6'1") and Stanford's John Martin (6'0"). Our current list is limited to available information [...more]

Minnesota and Nebraska Destroy Scoreboard With Weekend’s Top Scores

Minnesota and Nebraska Destroy Scoreboard With Weekend’s Top Scores

The Big Ten Network struck television programming gold, scheduling the broadcast of a rare (if not unprecedented) Saturday afternoon College Men's Gymnastics doubleheader. Both meets were highly entertaining, especially the night cap. It was a perfect showcase for NCAA Men's Gymnastics. Starting with the nightcap, one of the top two meets of the year took place in Lincoln, NE. It was quite a contrast to the two teams' [...more]
