With only one remaining meet next weekend, the last big regular-season weekend of NCAA Men's Gymnastics was one for the ages. Minnesota (411.15) gave their ten seniors a day to remember with their resounding win over visiting Cal (388.55). The Gophers coasted the whole way, earning team victories on five of six events and sweeping the individual titles. The Buckeyes took advantage of Stanford's early struggles on SR (63.20) to take a 5.5-point lead after three events. Toward the end of a big day of Men's Gymnastics, a huge upset was brewing in Iowa City late Saturday night. The last meet of the day produced the NCAA Men's season's biggest surprise. When the final scores were tallied, 10th-ranked Iowa (404.05) had polished off visiting 2nd-ranked Penn State (396.55) and Arizona State (376.15). The Hawkeyes posted their highest team score, fueled by team victories on four events. They established new season highs on SR (69.25) and PB (68.25). Two Big 10 teams (Illinois and Michigan) and collegiate national teams from Japan and Canada will invade the west coast to compete in the International Collegiate Challenge at Stanford. Going back to 2015, the topic of scoring accuracy (especially during the regular season) is a common concern among NCAA Men's Gymnastics fans. Perhaps there are regional differences, obviously because the judging panels from all the various meets are not the same. Since it all comes out in the wash at the NCAA Championships, does it even matter? When the championship is on the line, the playing field is level. The only potential injustice is when regional scoring differences (Regional Qualifying Score) could adversely affect a bubble team from making the NCAA qualifying round of the top-12 teams.
