This season's crop of freshmen in NCAA men's gymnastics has been quite the productive bunch. Several are nationally ranked in the top 20 and have contributed mightily to their respective programs. Arguably, this is the most productive freshman class in a while, and looking at the pipeline of 2013 and 2014 athletes expected to sign letters of intent, this is looking like a [...more]
Penn State compiled the nation's season-high team score of 355.50 in their victory over Ohio State (347.20). The Nittany Lions overwhelmed the Buckeyes on all six events, including winning margins of over two points each on SR and HB. The nation's top rings program produced an average score of 15.21, led by Scott Rosenthal (16.10). The Lions, led by freshman Tristan Duverglas' 15.25, averaged an impressive 15.05 on [...more]
Happy Valley was the site for the battle between the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams. Penn State (347.80) prevailed over the Illini (346.50) in a closely fought match-up. The 2nd-ranked host Nittany Lions kept up their impressive streak of consistency, winning four team titles on FX, PH, SR and VT. Once again, Scott Rosenthal conquered SR (15.60), and freshman Craig Hernandez won his second title on PH (15.00). For the Illini, [...more]
In a big tri-meet in Berkeley, top-ranked Oklahoma (351.60) over host Cal (349.40) and Stanford (343.70). Good enough to keep their top ranking, the Sooners romped on FX and SR, which was enough to win out. Cal captured event team titles on the other four apparatus, but it wasn't quite enough. OU's Jake Dalton was tops on FX (15.60) and placed 2nd in the AA (86.70). Sooner freshman Dylan Akers made his debut in [...more]
Time for our annual list of six-footers listed on the rosters of NCAA men's gymnastics teams. While probably an incomplete list, due to the lack of vital statistics provided by various teams, this year's group is the largest so far (16) since we started tracking this four years ago. Air Force's Jared Tomaszewski and Washington's Greg Steward both measure in at [...more]
LAS VEGAS -- AT&T actually did me a favor Saturday night. Instead of tweeting some commentary at Winter Cup, poor 3G service enabled me to sit back, relax and watch some interesting men's gymnastics. John Orozco blew me away with his incredibly consistent across-the-board scoring on all six events. Orozco improved his AA score by a full 2 points, thanks to his near perfect [...more]
The last weekend of competition before Winter Cup produced plenty of men's gymnastics action throughout the country. The weekend's biggest draw featured a tri-meet between top-ranked Oklahoma, 2nd-ranked Illinois and 7th-ranked Michigan. Before a big crowd in Champaign, the host team did not disappoint. The Sooners were up by almost 4 points heading into the last rotation, and that's where the Illini posted crushing 1-2-3 numbers on [...more]
Another busy weekend in the college ranks. The day's best battle was Michigan hosting top-ranked Penn State. The two teams were neck & neck after four events, and it came down to PB and HB. The Wolverines' Syque Caesar spearheaded his team's 1.45 point victory on PB with a 15.40, and added a 14.70 on HB to add a cushion to the final margin... 340.30 to 338.45. Caesar also added a 14.80 on FX and a 14.70 [...more]
The 2012 Men's Gymnastics season is officially underway, with a full slate of NCAA action and some prominent club invitationals. The college MAG action was actually a mixed bag, especially due to many gymnasts sitting out either to injury or because of the upcoming Winter Cup. Those who did compete, mostly did so on a few events. However, among the notables competing AA, Illinois freshman CJ Maestas turned in [...more]
2011 was a watershed year for U.S.A. men’s gymnastics. So many notable achievements, and so little time as we close out the year. We have thought long and hard about the year’s top stories, and we finally came up with one that we believe will significantly help shape the U.S. program for many years. This was the year of the youth movement. There were three young gymnasts that really [...more]
