Illini Bounce Back with Big Road Victory over Ohio State

Illini Bounce Back with Big Road Victory over Ohio State

In another packed weekend of college men’s gymnastics, we saw pretty much a full slate of activity. Illinois (438.60) has developed a flair for the dramatic, as they were involved in another tussle, this time it was on the road at Ohio State (438.00). The Illini scored high enough on their final rotation (PB) to eke out a tight victory by less than a point. Representing about a ten-point turnaround from their narrow loss last weekend to Iowa, Coach Justin Spring’s boys ended up with their [...more]

Dalton Catches De Los Angeles on Final Event to Win 2013 Winter Cup

Dalton Catches De Los Angeles on Final Event to Win 2013 Winter Cup

As most gymnastics fans like to see, the 2013 Winter Cup came down to the final event. Michigan's Adrian de los Angeles clung to a slim .35 lead over Olympian Jake Dalton. De los Angeles had a nice routine on PH (13.30), but struggled a bit with his dismount. No doubt tired at the end of his very long routine, his bobble was just enough [...more]

Adrian de los Angeles Tops Qualifying Field at 2013 Winter Cup

A mere four tenths of a point separated 1st and 3rd place in the all-around at the 2013 Winter Cup. Michigan's Adrian de los Angeles (85.80) edged out Olympians Danell Leyva (85.50) and Jake Dalton (85.40) to lead the field after the qualifying round. De los Angeles needed an explosive FX routine (15.45) to eke out his slim margin. He was steady on everything else, and posted top 5 scores on three events (FX, PH, SR). Leyva had three [...more]

Huge Weekend for Men’s College & Club Gymnastics

Huge Weekend for Men’s College & Club Gymnastics

In an action-packed weekend of men's gymnastics, practically every club team and Div. I program in the country competed. The largest meet of the young season was the Windy City Invitational, hosted by UIC. This meet featured a club competition with teams from most parts of the country. Saturday night's collegiate competition had all but two Big 10 programs. In their inaugural meet of the season, Michigan (431.30) fared pretty well by outlasting [...more]

Early Signing Period Yields Outstanding List of Athletes

Early Signing Period Yields Outstanding List of Athletes

As of November 16, several signings are unreported for college men's gymnastics. The day's biggest announcement came from Stanford, as they announced the signing of Junior National Team member Akash Modi. This was a huge recruiting success for Stanford, as they will be getting a budding superstar capable of contributing on all six events right away. Modi placed 2nd AA at this year's U.S. Championships, and has already [...more]

Early Recruiting Announcements Made in College Men’s Gymnastics

Early Recruiting Announcements Made in College Men’s Gymnastics

I can't recall in the past seeing many gymnasts, if any at all, announcing their college commitments before the early signing period. So far, as of October 30, five gymnasts have publically announced via Twitter and/or Facebook. There may be others, so please don't hesitate to correct me on this. This is a very cool development for college MAG. Usually, the process is battened down as tight as a drum. Thanks to social media, many of our top high school seniors are talking about their college recruiting trips. The naysayers may think otherwise, but this has a [...more]

College Men’s Gymnastics Early Signing Period Rapidly Approaching

The early signing period for 2013-2014 recruits is rapidly approaching (Nov. 14-21). This year's crop of college MAG prospects looks to be every bit as good as last year's. We will be posting any signing news we get as soon as the ink is dry on the letters of intent. The recruits are now busy making their weekend visits to the schools that have expressed interest. Thanks to social media, the college MAG recruiting process is becoming a little more transparent than it has in previous years. This is a good thing for the sport. Football and basketball recruiting have always dominated [...more]

StickItMedia Exclusive Interview: Sean Melton

The results speak for themselves. Sean Melton has been a consistent top elite junior gymnast for a long time. He has won national AA titles at every level. Melton's formative years in the sport were spent at Orlando Metro under the tutelage of current Ohio State Assistant Coach Casimiro Suarez. When Suarez joined Head Coach Rustam Sharipov's staff last summer, Melton and teammate Jake Martin moved to Colorado Springs to live and train at the Olympic Training Center. Martin ultimately signed with the Buckeyes to begin his very promising collegiate career, while Melton will be completing his final [...more]
