Temple University Men's Gymnastics may have been dropped, but it isn't broken. Coach Jesse Kitzen-Abelson has been kind enough to outline his goals to keep Temple self-sufficient, thus remaining a viable option as a collegiate men's gymnastics program. Kitzen-Abelson has a strong resume, steeped [...more]
Undefeated Oklahoma did something that caught college gymnastics fans off guard. Coming off of a high-scoring, barnburner of a meet last weekend against Stanford, the last thing anybody thought was the Sooners coming back the following weekend to post their highest score. Coach Mark Williams gave several of his stars some rest this weekend, but it seems like no matter whom he inserts into the lineup, they [...more]
The future is here. Two current stalwarts of NCAA Men's Gymnastics dominated the podium at the 2017 American Cup. 2016 NCAA champ Yul Moldauer (85.931) occupied the top spot, and 2015 NCAA champ Akash Modi (84.398) earned the third spot. Sandwiched in-between was Olympic silver medalist (AA) Oleg Verniaiev (85.699). For Moldauer, it was the second jewel (Winter Cup) captured during this [...more]
The first weekend of 5-Up/5-Count was a success. Oklahoma and Stanford made definitive statements by scoring over 420. The Cardinal did it with reduced roles for Akash Modi, Robert Neff and Grant Breckenridge, and the Sooners did it with reduced roles for Yul Moldauer, Allan Bower and Hunter Justus. Both teams have outstanding depth and leadership.
That depth certainly [...more]
Canadian gymnasts are no strangers to NCAA Men's Gymnastics. Casey Sandy (Montreal, PQ) was the 2008 NCAA All-Around Champion and earned that season's Nissen-Emery Award. This season, eight Canadian gymnasts are listed on NCAA team rosters. The top-ranked Canadian all-arounder is Penn State freshman Sam Zakutney, who is also ranked [...more]
LAS VEGAS, NV -- Gymnastics fans expected a dogfight. They wanted a dogfight, and that's exactly what they got! Stanford's Akash Modi took a slim 1.4-point lead into Saturday night's Winter Cup finals over his Oklahoma rivals Yul Moldauer and Allan Bower, and the Olympic Training Center's Donnell Whittenburg and Donothan Bailey. Modi held on to a scant .35 lead over Moldauer heading into the final rotation. The championship was going to be decided precisely how [...more]
Stanford senior and 2016 Olympic Alternate Akash Modi (86.30) practically led from start to finish to end up the Day 1 leader at the 2017 Winter Cup Challenge. Modi had top-10 finishes on all six events, including the day's best score on PB (14.85). He was able to build up a decent-sized lead to fend off a late charge by Oklahoma's Allan Bower (84.85) and Yul Moldauer (84.85). It was reminiscent of last April's [...more]
Although the final scoreboard may indicate otherwise, Friday night's tri-meet featuring host Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma produced enough fireworks to be seen all the way to Omaha. Oklahoma (426.60) generated just a few more fireworks than Minnesota (417.20) and Iowa (414.65) to win a very exciting meet. The Gophers and Hawkeyes posted several individual and team season highs, including their best team all-around scores. Bean counters lost count of all the season highs for all three after [...more]
Ohio State (422.20) came out with most of their big guns blazing, putting up their season best on the scoreboard over visiting Michigan (404.95). Competing on four events for the first time this season, Sean Melton compiled a four-event average of 14.41 that included an event title on FX (14.40). Jake Martin won his second AA title of the season, tallying 85.25, which is the seventh highest in the country so far. Martin also earned [...more]
2016 NCAA All-Around Champ Yul Moldauer competed his first AA of the young season and did not waste any time showcasing his full intention to repeat. Compiling two more scores of 15 or better, he captured three event titles (FX-14.85, SR-15.10, PB-15.15) and posted the NCAA's second highest AA score (88.35). In a season where scores of 15 are a rare commodity, Moldauer has now achieved [...more]
